Like a lot of holiday resorts in Majorca, Cala Dor (Golden Cove) evolved from a local fishing village after its charms and idyllic setting were discovered. Cala Dor is now a very desirable spot to have a holiday home, or for a relaxing seaside vacation.
The original village and harbour was situated in one of the small coves with sandy beaches, called 'calas'. The resort has now spread out to encompass several of these coves, all now beset with attractive hotels, apartment blocks and villas. It is a very chic resort, recommended for families because most establishments cater extremely well for children.
Cala Dor has seven beaches, of which the largest is Cala Gran, all with fine white sand and clear shallow water. The larger beaches have good facilities offering watersports including sailing, windsurfing and scuba-diving, however these main beaches can become quite busy, especially during July and August so try to get there early for a good spot. Most hotels offer full entertainment programmes for children, and there are trampolines and mini go-karts at Mallorcalandia, as well as mini-golf in the town centre.
This is a family-oriented holiday resort and does not cater for the 18-30 market. Nightlife is tasteful and stylish, centred around the many cocktail bars and discos, most bars will be quiet by 2am and those looking to party are best advised to head to the south of the island.
Cala Dors upmarket restaurants are situated around the marina, which is usually abuzz with a lively crowd enjoying a variety of cuisines. The centre of town offers fast food outlets, tapas bars, pizza and burger joints, plus several British style pubs.
Cala Dor has one of the best shopping districts. Its main shopping street, Avinguda Tagomago, is lined with chic boutiques, leather shops and galleries appealing to locals and holidaymakers alike. Designer clothes and shoes are available at reasonable prices, plus visitors can also find bargains in designer sunglasses, jewellery and perfumes. Those in self-catering apartments will find all they require at the resort's biggest supermarket, Caprabo.
Cala Dor is approximately a 60 minutes transfer from the airport
