Palma Nova

Palma Nova

Together with its nearby neighbour, Magaluf, the resort of Palma Nova on the south west coast of Majorca makes up the most popular holiday area on the island. The three sandy beaches of Es Carregador, Playa de Palma Nova and Son Matias are backed by a long promenade and have European Blue Flag status. Palma Nova is separated from Europe's famed party capital Magaluf by a rocky headland, and it is quieter than its lively neighbour which makes it popular for families.

The resort is also popular with British tourists wishing to escape the cold UK winters and many Palma Nova hotels offer discounted rates during the winter season. While a fair amount of the bars in the resort are closed during the winter months, there is still plenty of keep most people entertained. The quiet beaches are ideal for a stroll in the warm winter sunshine and the hotels often have entertainment to suit the clientele at that time of year such as quizzes and bingo.

Palma Nova offers numerous pursuits to suit young and old, making it an ideal family holiday resort. All manner of watersports and boat trips are available and there are plenty of sports facilities, particularly golf courses, in the vicinity. There is also a giant water-park nearby, a go-kart track and a short distance away is a marine park featuring dolphins and sea lions. Palma Nova is also connected by a frequent, cheap bus service to the capital of Palma.

Although nowhere as busy and lively as Magaluf, the beaches can become busy in the peak summer season, and this is not the place to seek out for a quiet getaway during those months. There are an abundance of bars and pubs to choose from and some bars have discos or live acts on during the evening. If a wilder night is called for, Magaluf’s party strip is only a 15-20 minute walk away.

Palma Nova has some of the best restaurants on Majorca, the long promenade that stretches along the three beaches is lined with dozens of good restaurants offering British, Indian, French, Italian, Japanese and Mexican cuisine. Several Spanish bars serve up tapas snacks during the day, and of course there are plenty of seafood eateries to choose from.

Holidaymakers who prefer not to stray too far from their accommodation and the beach will be able to find all they need in the commercial centre of Palma Nova, which is sprinkled with convenience stores, souvenir shops, electrical and clothing outlets. A large Mercadona supermarket can also be found in the town for all self catering needs. Serious shoppers can catch a bus or taxi into Palma, which is famed for its excellent shopping. Every Monday there is a market in nearby Calvia and a market held in Andratx every Wednesday.

Palma Nova is especially popular with those looking for a more lively family holiday with plenty of entertainment options to choose from.
